Today the Federal Reserve met and around 2:20 PM released this statement on its open market committee on interest and and monetary policy. This has been a widely anticipated decision today following the sixth largest point decline in the history of the DOW Jones Industrial average yesterday. Key highlights - Fed says it will keep interest rates at the near zero rates through at least mid-2013. That is a new addition from its previous statements. read more

The financial markets have been under pressure now for weeks and the selling reached a crescendo last week as the DOW fell over 500 points in one day on Thursday. This weekend people are even more worried about what may happen this week, because ratings agency Standard & Poor's downgraded U.S. Treasury bonds from a AAA rating to AA+. All the talk this weekend is about deft default. The US Treasury is going to run out of money come August unless Congress agrees to allow it to raise its debt limit.
